DEAR SUN SPOTS: This letter is for all the people in the great state of Maine!

I am a third grade student in northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of Maine in the month of May. I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud.

Although I have gathered facts about your state from books and websites, I think that I can receive the best information from the people who live there. This is why I am writing to you. I’m hoping that you would be willing to send me some items to help me learn more about the best things in your state. You might consider sending items such as postcards, pictures, souvenirs, this letter from the newspaper, or any other unique items that would be useful or show your state pride.

Here are a few questions: Why do you live in your state? What first brought your family there? How do you make money? What is your job? What does your state look like? What do people do for fun? What animals live there? What traditional food/recipes does your state have? What type of music is native to your state? Do you have a state athletic team? What geographic features are unique to your state?

I will need to gather all my information by the second week of May. Please mail items and answers to my questions to me at:

ANSWER: Sun Spots has gotten these letters from students in the past. It would be wonderful if readers helped Lila get an A+ by answering her questions and sending her photos, trinkets, recipes and CDs. How about a Sea Dogs ball cap, a copy of the Sun Journal or other Maine publication, or a key chain with a lobster or lighthouse dangling from it?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The United Methodist Church of Auburn has selected this year’s Lenten Offering project. We knew that individually honoring area health care workers would be impossible so we’re raising money to support Love Beyond Borders, an interfaith movement to end the pandemic supported by UNICEF.

This campaign aims to raise funds for the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines around the world. The United Methodist Church is engaged in supporting COVAX alongside UNICEF, the key vaccine delivery partner. All funds raised will be sent to UNICEF through UM Global Ministries for this project. If you would like to learn more about this project, go to https://icrinc.org/.

We invite the community to share in our thanks to our health care workers by sending a donation to The United Methodist Church of Auburn, 439 Park Ave., Auburn, ME04210. Please indicate Love Beyond Borders in the memo line of your check.

We cannot be more impressed by all our health care workers in what has been a very difficult two years. We’ll never be able to thank them enough for their truly heroic work. — Janet, Turner

ANSWER: Donations are being collected throughout Lent so you have a few more weeks to give.
