J.J. Harrison, center right, smiles March 31 as he greets his teacher, Sue Hedrich, left, at Farwell Elementary School in Lewiston. Hedrich, a special education teacher, had just arrived at the school by limousine after being nominated for a Golden Apple Award. Hedrich’s students waited for her to arrive and then climbed in to see the inside of a limousine. “I had no idea I was even nominated. It’s very humbling,” the first-year teacher says. “I worked in health care for 31 years and always wanted to be a teacher, but did not have the time or money to go back to school. Now, I am here at Farwell and I love it.” The Golden Apple Award is given out by 107.5 Frank FM radio to recognize outstanding teachers. Hedrich says she was nominated by a student intern from Bates College in Lewiston. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

Nate Landry, operations manager for the Lewiston Water & Sewer Division, uses a geophone March 28 to listen for water running under a driveway on Mountview Terrace. “It works great for hearing the water and rocks moving around just below the surface, but you have to be careful as you’ll go deaf if you clang them together,” he says. The device helps determine locations of water main leaks or breaks. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal
