I write in response to the March 31 article, “Bill would double vehicle inspection fee across most of Maine.”

Each year, I have to endure the insult of having someone else decide if my car is safe to use.

Vehicle inspections have been keeping numerous Mainers car poor for more than 60 years. Further bilking citizens to compensate garages for the inconvenience of performing the inspection is not the only solution.

Why not make vehicle inspections voluntary? I’m sure most drivers would just as soon have them abolished altogether, but those who are insecure are welcome to have their vehicle checked over as they see fit.

The rest of us will stop being a yearly nuisance to auto shops across Maine.
