The Lewiston-Auburn SPCA Animal Shelter announces its newest fund-raising venture, Cash or Kennel. On May 8 and 9, a small army of volunteer “Animal Control Officers” will pick up individuals to spend an hour in a dog kennel. People will call friends and relatives to help them raise the impoundment fee necessary to be freed. Animal Shelter Business Manager Joline Richard feels this could be the shelter’s biggest fund-raising event of the year. Richard stated, “we need a boost after a very expensive winter with lots of sickness in the shelter. This will really help us continue programs like our pre-release spay neuter program.” The event is being staged at Cherryfields on Washington Street in Auburn. Each individual will be given the use of a cellular phone from Maine Cellular to make all the necessary calls to raise the release fee. Pledge forms will be provided which will be mailed to each contributor. Richard indicated the shelter is grateful to both businesses for donating their facilities. Other event sponsors include the Kennel Shop, The Maine Bucket Company, Sun-Journal/Sunday and WLAM.
