NORWAY — The Select Board agreed Thursday to purchase a 2022 Jeep Cherokee Latitude with $25,000 already approved and up to $5,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds.

The vehicle will be used by the Code Enforcement Department and will be purchased from Macdonald Motors in Bridgton for $29,859.

Voters at last year’s Town Meeting approved spending $25,000 to buy a vehicle for the Code Enforcement Department. When sent out to bid in July 2021, no dealership had a 2021 available. Bessey Motors was the low bidder for a 2022 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, said Town Manager Dennis Lajoie.

Town officials signed a purchase order with Bessey on Aug. 19, 2021, for $24,321, which included the municipal discount program.

However, two weeks ago, Bessey informed town officials that Jeep was not offering the municipal discount program during 2022, but they could try again next year. The dealership added that they had two Cherokee Latitudes in transit for $32,318 apiece, but the vehicles included options that Lajoie did not feel were necessary.

Macdonald Motors had the vehicle the town wanted on its lot and the two sides agreed to a price of $29,859. The Select Board unanimously agreed to use up to $5,000 in ARPA funding to complete the purchase.

In other business, Lajoie reported that Phase 1 of the Municipal Complex, storage and safe expansion is on track. Work on the first phase, which includes safe expansion, garage, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant expansion and phone wiring, is out to bid and will be opened in a couple of weeks.

Phase 2 of the project, which includes interior police department and community space improvements, is awaiting word if it will receive any congressional earmark funds. The town is seeking $850,000.

The town is receiving applications for the soon-to-be-vacant police chief position. The town hopes to hire a replacement for retiring Chief Robert Federico by July 11.

The board approved the renewal of a liquor license for Norway Gelato Co. d/b/a Dolce Amici at 427 Main St. The board also approved a request by Stephens Memorial Hospital to hold a 5-kilometer run/walk on Sunday, June 5. Jennifer Fogg, the event organizer, said she expects up to 250 participants.
