50 Years Ago: 1972
The teaching methods involved in the Lewiston Bilingual Education Program will be on display this evening during a meeting to be held in the large conference room of the new Canal Bank at the corner of Pine and Park Streets, in Lewiston. Donald Dugas, project director, has invited all parents of youngsters involved in the program as well as the general public. Video films taken during actual classroom sessions will be shown, as will the work of the youngsters. The bilingual program involves the teaching of certain subjects in French in a few classes at St. Mary’s, Martel and Holy Family Public Schools in Lewiston. The kindergarten and first grade pupils are also initiated to French culture during the half-day sessions. Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to get started at 7:30.
25 Years Ago: 1997
The local Drug Abuse Resistance Education officers, Larry White Sr. of Jay, and Phil Porter of Livermore Falls, are co-sponsoring a special event Saturday, April 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Murray Hall in Livermore Falls. All of this year’s and last year’s DARE students are invited to the event. Music will be by disk jockey Louis Hardy, and refreshments will be available from a concession area provided by Pike’s Corner Oasis.
