DEAR SUN SPOTS: Volunteers are needed to reach out to isolated seniors. This past year has been difficult, especially for seniors in our community who are living alone. Members of our community are encouraged to reach out to the elderly neighbors they know and to meet new neighbors by volunteering.

The Catholic Charities SEARCH Program of Androscoggin County is looking for volunteers to assist seniors in Auburn, Greene, Lewiston, Lisbon/Lisbon Falls and Turner.

SEARCH stands for Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage and Hope. SEARCH matches screened and trained volunteers with isolated seniors who need long-term companionship as well as help with grocery shopping and errands. Community volunteers come from all faiths, age groups, and walks of life. The mission of SEARCH is to enable vulnerable seniors to remain independent and create a long-term support system to meet their needs.

Volunteers generally spend two to four hours a week with seniors, making their own schedule as their time permits. Seniors are especially grateful for the help they receive. Help make a difference in the life of a senior and volunteer with us!

ANSWER: I have participated in a similar program in the past and I can attest to the fact that’s it is really rewarding to connect with a senior. All those little things we can do for them mean so much.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is an update regarding the bag of fabric scraps that I was offering to a nonprofit organization. I did find a home for the scraps and some other fabric as well. A wonderful lady named Pauline from Greene and her twin sister, Paulette, from Auburn received them.

These ladies make gift totes for the patients at Central Maine Medical Center Oncology Department and other wonderful people help to fill them. When I spoke with Pauline she told me that when she and her sister finish the totes they are currently working on, it will make a total of over 900 bags they have donated! What a wonderful thing these ladies are doing. I was so very happy to help them out. — Charlotte, Auburn

ANSWER: What a great story! I love when readers let me know what happens when they make a request like this. Isn’t it amazing how beautiful things can turn out? The outcome is often even better than we could have dreamed. “Give and you shall receive…”
