RUMFORD — The 2022 Mountain Valley Rec Invitational Basketball Tournament recently took place after a two-year layoff due to health restrictions. It was the 21st year of the event in the Rumford area after the tournament started in the early 80s in Rangeley.

There were six A teams: Bates Old Bulls (Bates Alumni and current Bates players), Caught in Traffic (Husson Alumni and others), Class Acts Property Management of Portland, The Hoopers of Central Maine, Rainor Mechanical of Jay, Triple C Auto of Lewiston. 10 B teams: Archies Inc of Mexico, Beariers (University of Maine and Thomas College alumni and players), Cannatopia Runners of Farmington, Double Dribble of Waterville area, Hink’s Bait of Wiscassett, Hotel Rumford, Laid Back Installers of Mexico, Long Island New York, Maine Event of Auburn and Smart Care PT of Dixfield.

The Senior Divison was represented by Express of the Bangor area, Ralph’s Store of Rumford, Shooters of Auburn, Chapter 11 Furniture of Lewiston. Players came from all over New England and New York.

The A division was won by Caught in Traffic and MVP Travon Bulter and former St John’s star and current Bridgton Acadamy assistant coach, Paris Horne. They beat Class Acts. The A division all-stars were MVP Travor Butler, Paris Horne and Isaiah Brathwaite of CIT, Drew Coppenwrath, and Mike Deleon of Class Acts.

The B division was won by Smart Care, led by MVP Aaron Toman and Wyatt Hathaway. They beat Double Dribble. B division all-stars were MVP Aaron Toman and Wyatt Hathaway of Smart Care, Jordan Holmes of DD, Chris Hersom of Hink’s Bait and Parker Desjardins of Beariers.

The Senior division was again won by Express captained by Frank Brilliant and featuring Ricky White and Ramone Jones. They beat Ralph’s Store.

The foul shooting contest was won by Wyatt Hathaway. The 3-point contest was captured by Jordan Holmes. The slam dunk contest winner was Mike Deleon.

The Mountain Valley Athletic Boosters, along with several Mountain Valley high school teams assisted throughout the weekend. All proceeds will go to support all involved and other recreation programs in the area. There are already plans for the 2023 tournament with the expectation that it will be even bigger and better.
