YARMOUTH —Winning pitcher Eli Soehren gave up three hits and steered Oxford Hills to 9-0 shutout win over Yarmouth in a baseball season-opener on Monday.

Soehren also helped his cause with three hits. Nick Binette, Andrew Merrill and Isaiah Oufiero each doubled for Oxford Hills. Merrill and Tardiff each had two hits.

The Vikings, who finished with 10 hits, put Yarmouth away with a four-run fifth inning.

UMF SWEEPS NVU-LYNDON: Stellar defense and a pair of complete-game pitching performances allowed the Beavers to prevail in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the Badgers at Hippach Field in Farmington.

The Beavers posted a 3-2 win in the first game of the twinbill behind Riley Bartell’s seven-strikeout performance, and UMaine-Farmington completed the doubleheader sweep with a 2-0 shutout over the Hornets on Aaron Goschke’s five-hit, four-strikeout effort on the mound.

In the opener, UMaine-Farmington (6-17, 4-4 NAC) scored all three of its runs in the second inning, keyed by Hunter LaBossiere’s two-run single to left field. Troy Johnson drove in the other run earlier in the frame with a base hit to left field that scored Tyler Lambert.

Bartell scattered six hits and issued no walks to go with his seven strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Beavers again combined solid defense with a sparkling pitching effort by Goschke to complete the win. UMaine-Farmington allowed NVU-Lyndon (7-18, 3-3 NAC) to safely get a base runner as far as third just once in the game, and twice squelched Hornet rallies with inning-ending double plays.

UMF plated its first run in the home half of the first inning on Lambert’s sac fly to right field, scoring LaBossiere. The Beavers’ second run came in the fifth when Jonny Pruett and LaBossiere opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and Bartell’s fielder’s choice grounder to short allowed Pruett to cross and extended UMaine-Farmington’s lead to 2-0.

USM SPLITS WITH COLBY: The Huskies (14-13) won the opener 2-1 and the Mules (16-11) took the second game 7-2 in Gorham.

In the opener, Oxford Hills graduate Lauren Merrill tossed a three-hitter with three walks and four strikeouts to outduel Colby’s Sam Ahlholm, who allowed seven hits, no walks and struck out three. Belle Snyder scored on a throwing error in the fifth to break the 1-1 tie.

Morgan Fusco had two hits with two RBI and two runs for the Mules in the second game; she hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Katelyn Hays had two hits, including a two-run single during a four-run third for Colby.
