Marie Arsenault Hartranft
AUGUSTA – Marie Arsenault Hartranft, 76, the much-loved and adored wife of Thomas W Hartranft, passed away from dementia on April 15th, 2022 at the Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care facility in Augusta. Marie was born on July 30, 1945 in Rumford to Robert and Eugenie Arsenault . She attended St. John’s parochial school in Rumford until the 8th grade and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford in 1963.After high school, Marie worked for several years at the Oxford Federal Credit Union in Mexico. Marie married her high school sweetheart Thomas W Hartranft in 1968. They were married 54 years.Thomas’ career caused them to relocate and move to 12 different homes from Truro, Nova Scotia to Huntsville, Alabama. After Thomas retired in 2001, they settled in Greenville, South Carolina. Marie often recalled growing up in the wonderful years of the 50’s and 60’s with loving parents and her four siblings. She fondly spoke of those times of walking home from school for lunch and sitting down with her entire family for their big meal of the day. In spite of all her faded memories, she always recalled ice skating at the old Pettengill school ice rink. She would call on her two years experience as the Stephens High School head cheerleader to demonstrate some of her cheerleading moves to her two adoring daughters, causing them to laugh hysterically. In 2015, Marie and Thomas sadly lost their 46 year-old daughter, Lynn. To be closer to their remaining daughter, Lori and family, this life changing tragedy prompted them to move back, in 2016, to the house they owned in Rumford. Marie was a Type 1, insulin dependent diabetic for over 40 years. She was an early user of insulin pump therapy, taking control of her blood sugars with a level of commitment seldom seen. Her doctors and endocrinologists were always amazed at the level of blood sugar control she achieved, giving her credit as the best controlled and most disciplined patient they had. Marie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She often spoke fondly of the months she spent helping her daughter Lori when Lori’s three sons were born. “Grammy” loved taking care of her little grandsons and watching them become young men. Her husband Thomas claimed “Marie was most happy when with her family or at home reading, doing crossword puzzles and maintaining her immaculately clean house. She was a sweet and gentle person.” Marie is survived by her husband, Thomas of Rumford; daughter, Lori Rozmus (Stephen ) of Cos Cob, CT, and her three grandsons, Tyler, Casey and Bailey Rozmus; her sister, Anne Bitter of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; her older brother, Robert Arsenault (Mary, deceased 4/11/22 ) of Murrels Inlet, South Carolina; and her younger brother, Richard Arsenault (Sally) of Hanover; her sisters in-law, Jeanne Hartranft Migliardi (Don) of Cos Cob, CT and Holly Hartranft Deshane (Tom) of Brewer. She was predeceased by her parents, her older daughter Lynn of Milford, and her older sister Alice Boudreau of Milford, CT. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. It is with the deepest gratitude our family thanks the entire staff at the Maine General Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care facility in Augusta. We cannot possibly imagine any better care than what was given Marie during her stay. They consider their residents as family and this well staffed facility definitely treats them accordingly.
