20 years ago: Long-time Telstar teacher, coach, and administrator Sally Hannon announced that she would retire at the end of the school year. Four area fire departments combined to keep a fire in the 40-foot-high silo at Bethel Furniture Stock from doing extensive damage.

30 years ago: The building at Bean’s Corner, originally a dance hall and more recently a hen house and a cow barn, was being torn down. Sunday River Ski Resort announced it would give two complimentary 1992-93 season ski passes to the 500,000th skier of the season.

40 years ago: Randall Chretien was appointed pastor of North Brewer-Eddington Methodist Church. Dan Vogt and John Gasser of Bethel ran the Boston Marathon. Dan came in 107, with a time of 2:27:10.

50 years ago: The Telstar Drama Club was rehearsing for a production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.” The State Highway crew had completed repairs on the Wild River Bridge in Gilead.

60 years ago: Richard Waldron and Robert Chadbourne were in Quebec City taking a course on forestry. Plans for the two-room addition to Crescent Park School were presented to the Bethel School Building Committee by the architect.

70 years ago: Stanley Davis, Stanley Brown, and Frank Lowell left for a 2- to 3-month stay in Juneau, Alaska. The office and canopy were removed from the front of the former Herrick’s Garage, lower Main Street. Bucky’s Service Station, on Railroad Street, received a face-lift that included removal of the canopy and a new front with a roof sloping to the rear.

80 years ago: Men 45-65 were called upon to register for the selective service.


Death: Mrs. Mabel Dutton.

90 years ago: Guy Morgan was making extensive improvements on the filling station property on the West Bethel Road. Paul Croteau’s home in West Greenwood was destroyed by fire. All furnishings were lost.

100 years ago: Robert D. Hanscom was chosen to take part in the Stanley Plummer Prize Speaking Contest to be held at Bowdoin College. At the Bangor convention, Herman Mason and Miss Cleo Russell were appointed as members of the Oxford County Republican County Committee.

Death: Joseph Douglass.

120 years ago: J.P. Skillings erected a birch mill in the town of Sumner. A. F. Andrews and Son of Norway sold $20,000 worth of wool.
