Maine fiddler Owen Kennedy will perform at the Oasis of Music in the lower chapel beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston.

Owen Kennedy is a 16-year-old fiddler whose love of traditional music and enthusiasm for performing has captivated audiences from San Diego to the Shetland Islands and all over New England. He enjoys tunes from traditions beyond Maine, especially Scotland and Shetland, Cape Breton, Quebec & the Maritimes, and appreciates the challenge of playing true to the authentic style of a place and culture.

Kennedy recorded his debut album “Oh When: Now with Owen Marshall” in February, with plans to release it in the late summer/early fall. As an emerging musician rooted in the Maine Maritime music tradition and exploring the music of Scotland, the album includes the tunes he’s loved for years as well as newer favorites from Shetland and Scotland.

Though young, Kennedy is a seasoned performer – entertaining at the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors dinner and kicking off their National Conference in San Diego with an audience of several thousand and performing solo at the 2019 Shetland Folk Frenzy Big Gig at The Mareel in Lerwick. He has opened for Còig, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Pete’s Posse, and an Acadia Trad Festival concert in Bar Harbor, and has shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, The Outside Track, Genticorum, and Andrea Beaton and Troy MacGillivray.

The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly thirty minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. COVID restrictions of optional mask-wearing and social distancing are observed. The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is located at 122 Ash St., Lewiston. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
