SKOWHEGAN — A car that crashed into Hero’s Pizza Friday morning caused significant structural damage to the building, but did not result in any injuries, police said.

At 6:50 a.m. Friday, Robert Gartley, 34, of New Sharon was driving his 2005 Toyota Scion west on Waterville Road, said Skowhegan police Chief David Bucknam in a news release. Gartley fell asleep and drifted off the road, before crashing into the corner of Hero’s Pizza, located at 60 Waterville Road/Route 201.

The crash caused significant structural damage to the building and crushed the front of the vehicle, Bucknam said. The restaurant was closed at the time and no one was injured.

“While many associate Friday the 13th as a day of misfortune and for Robert this could ring true,” Bucknam said, “I try to find the brighter side of things as Robert was not injured and Hero’s Pizza was not opened for business. If this crash had happened later in the morning, things may have been different.”

According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the staff were assessing the damage to the building but were able to get a food truck up and running, allowing them to offer a limited menu on Friday.

“Somehow with determination we have our food truck set up,” the restaurant posted. “We will be running a small menu as we try and run out some of our prep. Please stop by and support us.”
