100 Years Ago: 1922

The Buckfield High School and Grammar School will present an operetta, “Princess Chrysanthemum” at the Old Church on the hill Friday evening. The operetta is the culmination of a course in music given this year under the efficient leadership of Mrs. Etta Mitchell who had been secured by the students themselves to promote this phase of their education. The scene of the operetta is in Japan and is filled with humorous situations. The chorus numbers about 50.

50 Years Ago: 1972

An early evening supper and musical program will be presented May 21 at the Lewiston-Auburn Jewish Community Center, featuring widely known guitarist and historian Bill Bonyun, who will be accompanied by his wife, Gene. Bonyun has appeared before many school groups making the early days of American history come to life through his humor, songs, and stories. The Adult Education Committee is sponsoring the program.

25 Years Ago: 1997

A road that once led to Auburn’s largest shoe factory may be history after Monday night’s City Council meeting. The council will consider discontinuing Old Union Street Extension and Spring Street Extension at the Auburn City Building in a regular meeting, scheduled after Monday’s joint session with the Lewiston City Council. The Auburn only portion of the meeting is expected to start around 7:30 pm. The portion of Old Union Street considered for discontinuance was once the home of Clark Shoe. In its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s, the company turned out 10,000 pairs of shoes each day. The factory, one of the largest ever built in Auburn, was torn down in 1992. The request to discontinue the roads was made by the Timone Co. The council is expected to take its final vote on a tattoo establishment licensing ordinance. The ordinance includes a one-time $100 fee for license applicants and an annual renewal fee thereafter.
