100 Years Ago: 1922

Hundreds of Lewiston-Auburn people inspected the renovated Berry Paper company Saturday afternoon and there will even be more Saturday night when the reception hours are from seven to nine. All of us are interested in the development of our city, and here was an indication in significant and impressive form. There were flowers, music, and many attentive clerks. Nothing was lacking to make the groups of visitors feel welcome and at home.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Shapiro Bros. Shoe Co. Inc., which for 34 years occupied quarters In the Cushman Hollis building on Court  Street now is fully operative in the former Lown Shoes building on Minot Avenue in Auburn. The move of the large shoe manufacturing concern took about three weeks to accomplish as the factory was moved department by department with as little interruption to manufacturing as possible. The move actually covered a distance of less than a quarter of a mile. Shapiro Bros. started operations in Auburn in 1938 and gradually expanded its space needs in the Cushman Hollis building. It was reported Thursday the company will be occupying about 80,000 square feet of floor space in the building. George E. Shapiro, company treasurer, reported that Shapiro Bros. is using a section of the first floor of the Lown building for office space and another space on that floor for shipping. The second and third floors are utilized for manufacturing and a small ell section of the fourth floor for storage.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The last program in the spring series, Boxcar lunch will be held at noon Wednesday at the Lewiston-Auburn YWCA. Barbara Randall, hostess, will offer food, slides and a talk about San Antonio. The fee is $3.00 for members and $5.00 for non members.
