DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for obituaries of the soldiers from Sabattus who were killed in action in World War II. I have five names: Alphee V. Caron, Lewis V. Flanders, Emilien Fontaine, Adrien Roux and Clarence Elmon Tyler. The Sabattus American Legion is doing a project for Memorial Day, and it would be nice if we could find the obituaries of these brave young men who gave their all. — Joan, Sabattus

ANSWER: We were able to find online obituaries for Caron and Fontaine and service records for Roux and Tyler.

Alphee V. Caron was the son of Alfred A. Caron and Mary J. Caron. Alphee served as a corporal, Company E, 103rd Infantry, 43rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army, during World War II. He resided in Androscoggin County, Maine, prior to the war. He enlisted in the Maine National Guard on Feb. 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Lewiston, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the amusement occupation and also as single, without dependents. Alphee was “Killed In Action” in the New Georgia Islands, Philippines, during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart. He died July 25, 1943, at the age of 25.

Emilien Fontaine served as a technician fifth grade, Company B, 20th Motorized Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, U.S. Army, during World War II. He resided in Androscoggin County, Maine, prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on Nov. 2, 1942, in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a driver and also as single, without dependents. He was awarded the Purple Heart after dying of wounds received in battle on March 30, 1945, in Germany. He was 23.

Adrien Roux was a private in the U.S. Army who died in battle in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. No further information could be found online.

Clarence E. Tyler was a World War II-era casualty on March 19, 1945. He served with honor in the United States Navy as a fireman first class. He was declared dead while missing in action or lost at sea. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

We could not find any information on Lewis V. Flanders. Maybe readers can help?
