Mystery Photo for May 22, 2022. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal

For the third time in the past 10 years, we stumped readers, including the nearly dozen people who incorrectly guessed where the Mystery Photo was located. (A few thought it was part of the “Big Indian” in Freeport.) This totem pole on Main Street in Norway is named “TomTomDougElliGay, II” as the plaque nearby states. It also notes that the property was originally where Samuel Ames built a home and the first grist mill in Norway. In the 1950s the property was purchased by Tom and Eleanor Ryan who ran Ryan’s Trading Post, where they sold many pairs of moccasins, as noted on the plaque. Tom had the first totem pole made and named it to recognize his family members. In 2014 the property was acquired to provide green space for the Old Squire’s Farm Market and C&C Farms and a new totem pole was installed that year and “serves to honor those who came before, and, welcome all who come here,” according to the plaque.
