The Ruby-throated hummingbird is easily reared as a pet, and some time ago I found a single young female in a nest in an oak tree that had been built in a piece of woods. Upon taking it home R.W. Shufeldt writes in the American Forestry magazine, “I experienced no trouble in getting it to drink from a teaspoon. When being fed it would sit on one of my fingers while I held the spoon with the other hand. At night it slept on the chandelier in the middle of the room, and in the morning, it would fly down to the glass vessel containing sweetened water which I had taught it to. And it would fly out an open window to visit the red honeysuckle that grew over the broad porchway of our home. On one occasion it flew back into the room  with loud and rapid twittering, followed by a bird of its own species. It wasn’t long after that my bird responded to the ‘call of the wild’ and flew away, never to return.”
