JAY — Two students from Spruce Mountain Elementary School are among the winners of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual Lyme Disease Awareness Month poster contest.

The contest for students in Kindergarten through grade eight is broken down into four categories.
Third grader Maisy Emery won for the grade two-three division.
In the grade four-five division fifth grader Anna Moffett was the winner.
“Maisy’s poster was also selected to be the official CDC poster that will be placed around State parks in Maine educating people about ticks and how to prevent them from causing tick borne diseases,” art teacher Tamara Lindsey said in an email May 26.
Lindsey has had students recognized in the contest every year since it began 13 years ago.
Each year she teaches about tick borne illnesses and students are asked to create an educational poster on how to keep safe from ticks.

“The project is our community service project for the year,” Lindsey wrote in an email last year.
On Friday, May 27, State Representative Shelia Lyman presented Maisy Emery and Anna Moffett with a gift bag and a framed certificate from the state and a State Of Maine pin.
Maine CDC noted students this year designed posters on the theme “Tick Wise.” Each poster illustrated at least one tick prevention tip:
• Know tick habitat and use caution in areas where ticks may live.
• Use an EPA-approved repellent.
• Wear protective clothing.
• Perform tick checks daily and after any outdoor activity.
Winners received a Maine State Parks family day pass and tick removal kits for all their classmates. Visit Maine CDC’s website (www.maine.gov/lyme) to view the winning posters.
