The man who was shot and killed at a Vassalboro apartment building on Memorial Day was a U.S. Army veteran whose legs were amputated in 2011 after he was hit by a van while helping another driver who had been in an automobile crash in Augusta.

The Maine State Police said Wednesday that Jeremy Gilley, 37, of Vassalboro was killed Monday morning at the apartment building at 513 Main St.

Another man who was injured by a gunshot in the same incident was identified as Joshua Bilodeau, 30, also of Vassalboro.

The state Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined Gilley died as a result of being shot, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The death has been deemed a homicide.

Moss said Wednesday no arrests had been made and police were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shootings and death. She said detectives will consult throughout the investigation with the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Maine Attorney General.

Several people were inside the apartment building when an argument started between two of the building’s residents, police said. Multiple gunshots were reportedly fired at 9:12 a.m. Monday in the hallway of the building.

Moss said Wednesday all the people inside the building had been interviewed by police and were cooperating with the investigation.

Bilodeau is recovering at a local hospital. Police have declined to release the identity of a third man who was reportedly involved in the incident but not injured.

Lt. Jeff Love of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit said at the crime scene Monday the three men involved in the incident lived at the apartment building, a former nursing home now owned by Violette Rentals, according to assessing records. A former owner of the building, which is across the street from Ron’s Auto Parts, said it has nine apartments.

In December 2011, Gilley was critically injured and lost his lower legs when he was hit by a van and pinned between two automobiles as he was helping an injured driver who had crashed his truck on Route 3 in Augusta, near the Cushnoc Crossing Bridge.

Gilley had surgery and used prosthetics following the crash.

Formerly of Palermo, Gilley was an Army specialist when he was discharged honorably in 2010, after four years of service that included eight months of combat duty in Baghdad. He and his then-partner, Rachael Turcotte, had a daughter, Kara Lee Gilley, born in 2013.

Also in 2013, Gilley was honored at a Red Cross Real Heroes Breakfast. Gilley, who walked on prosthetics with crutches to receive his award, recalled the blood he was given to save his life after the crash.

“If it weren’t for your generosity and selfless service, I wouldn’t be standing here today,” Gilley told the attendees at the breakfast.

Gilley said at the time he continued to feel “a lot of pain” in his legs, and keeping his prosthetics fitting comfortably was an ongoing process.

“It takes time,” he said. “It’s an awful lot to take on all at once. It’s nonstop. All day long, every day. It is what it is. It’s my life now.”

The driver of the truck who Gilley had stopped to help in 2011 was later convicted of operating under the influence.

The 16-year-old driver of the van that hit Gilley as he was rendering aid to the other driver was not charged in connection with the crash.
