Two construction workers suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon when the roof of a building under construction in Naples collapsed.
Shane Malloy, 44, of West Gardiner, and Harold Collins, 44, of Vassalboro, were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with what authorities described as life-threatening injuries. Both are employed by Malloy Construction Inc. in Gardiner.
A spokesman for Maine Medical Center said Tuesday night that Malloy and Collins were both in critical condition. No additional details were available.
The workplace accident, which took place at 12:54 p.m. at Captain Jack’s Restaurant and Naples Marina, is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to a release by Capt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office and the Naples Fire Department responded to the accident. Captain Jack’s Restaurant and the Naples Marina are located on the same property and share the same building, Foss said. The entire site is undergoing large-scale renovation, according to Foss.
While traveling to the scene Tuesday afternoon, emergency responders were informed that Malloy was pinned under the collapsed roof. Before they arrived, someone using a forklift extricated Malloy from the rubble. Malloy was initially transported to Bridgton Hospital before being airlifted to Maine Medical Center by Lifeflight helicopter.
Collins was also struck by the roof when it collapsed but was not pinned. He sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Several other members of the construction crew were in the vicinity, but were not harmed.
Foss said the roof was being assembled at ground level and had been elevated approximately 6 feet in the air when it collapsed. At the time, workers were underneath the roof as well as on top of it.

The Naples Marina issued a statement Tuesday evening on Facebook that said workers were attempting to secure a section of a shed roof, which was attached to the main building, when the roof broke away and struck the workers. Naples Marina said the workers became temporarily trapped under the roof until they were freed by marina employees.
Naples Marina said it is “fully cooperating” with the investigation by OSHA, and that Malloy Construction is the primary contractor for its renovation and expansion project.
Attempts to reach OSHA were unsuccessful Tuesday evening.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Malloy workers and their families,” Naples Marina said.
Captain Jack’s Restaurant and Naples Marina are located at 32 Naples Marina Lane, near the Route 302 causeway separating Long Lake from Brandy Pond.
According to Malloy Construction Inc.’s website, the company has been in business since 1998. The company builds custom homes, additions, does roofing and siding and works on commercial construction projects. A message left on the business’ office phone was not returned Tuesday evening.
