50 Years Ago: 1972
(From a Journal photo) A French program consisting of a series of French songs, skits and a dance will be presented this week by sixth graders in all of the Lewiston elementary schools as a means to end their French course for the year. These students display their talents before other students, their teachers and some parents. Donald Benjamin, Bert Pelletier and Paul Bouchard practice their drumming for a French song while Reny Willlams and Joyce Martin exchange a greeting in a French skit at St. Mary’s School. The French program was put together by Miss Claire Fortin, French elementary supervisor.
25 Years Ago: 1997
Longtime Greenwood selectman Nestor Tamminen was presented the Boston Post Cane last week at the Ledgeview Nursing Home in West Paris. Tamminen, the oldest citizen of Greenwood, was born in Finland in 1903. He served as the first selectman, was road commissioner and was involved in the mining industry. Tamminen also was manager of the Finnish Co-Operative Store in West Paris, now the West Paris General for many years. He will be 94 on June 22.
