Scribner’s Sawmill

Harrison — The Historic Scribner’s Saw Mill and Homestead site will be open for tours on  Saturday, June 18  from 1 – 4. Come early enough to enjoy the tour of the mill where you learn about the “Sash” saw used to cut lumber, how to put together a barrel, exhibits in the Long Shed, the blacksmith operating the forge in the blacksmith shop, and tour the Homestead. The barn and ice houses are also open for self-guided tours.

This season our volunteers will be finishing the recently raised timber frame that is to serve as an exhibit shed. The shed will hold early items related to the mill that will tell the early history and stories of the mill. There will be a special exhibit of a Barcus Horse Stock donated to the mill years ago. It will finally have a permanent home.

Scribner’s Mill is found south of Bolsters Mills on Jesse Mill Rd. crossing over the Crooked River Bridge into the Town of Harrison, the mill is on the left. From Routes 35 or 117, follow the Maine State Directional signs found at Carsley or Maple Ridge Roads, respectively.  For those following their GPS from Rte. 121, continue on Bolsters Mills Rd. to Jesse Mill Rd. instead of turning onto the Tamworth Rd.

A $5 donation for each adult is requested.  Check our website, scribnersmill.org, for more information about the mill.

Used Book Sales

PARIS — The Paris Public Library, located at 37 Market Square, South Paris, is holding used book sales on the Saturdays of June 25 and July 30 this summer. Both sales will be from 8 am to noon, and will be held in the driveway between the library and the Paris Town Office. In case of bad weather, the sales will be held in the downstairs meeting room of the neighboring Deering Memorial Community Center. The sale is by donation, asking visitors to donate for the items they select. Each sale will feature entirely original offerings and what is available can vary greatly from sale to sale. Proceeds from the donations are used to purchase new books for the library’s children’s collection. For more information, please call the Paris Public Library at 207-743-6994 or email [email protected].

Supper

WATERFORD — The North Waterford Congo Church will be offering a buffet-style all-you-can-eat Public Supper on Tuesday, June 28 from 5-6:30 p.m. There will be beans and casseroles, and featuring gingerbread for dessert. $12/each.

Chicken pies

HARRISON — Instead of the suppers that were put on monthly by the Bolsters Mills United Methodist Church before the Covid-19 pandemic, the Church will be selling their famous chicken pies on Saturday, June 18. To order a Chicken Pie, call the Church at 583-9024 on the morning of June 18 between 9 and 11 a.m.

Pies with gravy will be available for pickup that day at the Bolsters Mills UMC, 664 Bolsters Mills Road, Harrison, Maine, between the hours of Noon and 2 p.m. unless other arrangements are made at the time of placing the order. The Chicken Pie and gravy will be $15, cash and checks only.

It is our hope that in-person suppers can again be held monthly this summer; however, with the unpredictability of the status of the virus, we thought that selling the pies on the third Saturday of each month until further notice would a welcome alternative. We have missed everyone and look forward to hearing from you on June 18 at 9 a.m.!
