LOVELL — The Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library plans to host author and University of Southern Maine professor Donna Cassidy at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the library, 227 Main St.

Cassidy will talk about Maine artist Marsden Hartley immediately following the library’s annual meeting, which will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the King Community Room.

Born in Lewiston in 1877, Hartley gained a reputation as a modernist artist, having spent many years in avant-garde circles in New York, Paris and Berlin. Yet equally important for Hartley was his identity as a Maine artist, according to a news release from the library.

This talk will examine the critical importance of his connections to the state for his art, particularly his summers in Lovell and Stoneham in the first decade of the 20th century.

Cassidy is professor of Art History and American & New England Studies at USM, where she has taught since 1987.

She has published widely on modernism and regionalism in early 20th century American art and is the author of many books, including “Marsden Hartley: Race, Region, and Nation” and “Marsden Hartley’s Maine,” co-authored with Elizabeth Finch and Randall R. Griffey.

The annual meeting and Cassidy’s presentation will be available to watch simultaneously on Zoom. For more information and to access the Zoom link, visit hobbslibrary.org or call the library at 207-925-3177.
