100 Years Ago: 1922

Few boys in Maine and possibly any state can boast the record of Ellery M. Doyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie E. Doyle of Bath, when it comes to attending school. He just completed his eighth consecutive year without being absent, a wonderful record! He will be a sophomore next school year. So far as is known there is no record to compare it.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Two prize winning short works by India’s most famous director, Satyajit Ray, explore different aspects of the Universal theme “love” on Film Odyssey at 8:30 p.m., Friday, June 30, on Channel 10. The two films, ‘‘The Postmaster’’ and “The Conclusion,” are based on stories by Indian author, Rabindranath Tagore, as a combined work called “Two Daughters.” “The Postmaster” is the enchanting story of the relationship between a civil servant assigned to a remote forest village and his young serving girl. When he contracts malaria she nurses him back to health. Not until he leaves the village does he realize the depths of their mutual  affection. During “The Conclusion” a young tomboy bride flees from a forced marriage, but later returns to her sensitive groom in true love.

25 Years Ago: 1997

A room designed by an Auburn businesswoman for a fund-raising event will be featured in the fall issue of Traditional Home Magazine. The master bathroom designed by Lynne Maxfield of Decorating Plus Inc. on Center Street in Auburn was one of three rooms selected for inclusion in the magazine. The bathroom is part of the Designers ShowHouse ‘97 sponsored by the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Women’s Committee. The house, a classic seaside mansion in Cape Elizabeth, designed by John Calvin Stevens, was open to the public for three weeks in June, ending today. Several Maine designers took part in the fundraiser.
