Norway Center Church

NORWAY — The Norway Center Church begins its summer services on July 10. This summer marks the 218th year in the life of this congregation. The sanctuary was built in 1840, but the congregation has been worshipping together for 36 years prior to this building. The Congregational Society in Norway was organized on October 6, 1804. When Norway was first settled, this area was indeed the “center” of town, which explains the church’s name: Norway Center Church – but it is also the First Congregational Church of Norway. When the Second Congregational Church formed in 1852, the population shifted towards the village and a gradual decline in the membership began and continued until 1937. That year Dr. Wilhelm G. Felmeth was instrumental in converting it to a “summer church”. Four generations of the Felmeth Family have served the church since then: Doctor Wilhelm G. Felmeth, 1937-1953; Dr. William H. Felmeth, 1940-1988; Dr. John Felmeth 1947-1976; Rev. Richard Moore (Dr. William Felmeth’s son-in-law), 1971-2021 and Rev. Sarah Moore-Nokes, 2010. Unfortunately, Rev. Richard Moore will not be here this summer, but we thank him for his 50 years of dedicated worship. All denominations are welcome to join in fellowship.
