AUBURN — It sounds like a really good deal. A nice shirt with the official Auburn police logo and ten dollars off, to boot.
But don’t do it, police warned on Wednesday. A text message offering cheap shirts might appear to come from the department, but it’s a scam.
“Looks like there is a text-based ‘scam’ making the rounds today,” Auburn police posted on their Facebook page at about 4 p.m. Wednesday. “Several people have let us know they received the message below. Please know that the Auburn PD is NOT selling shirts (or anything else). Please don’t click on any links and DEFINITELY don’t order anything if you do.”
The message, received by several local people, offers “Auburn (Maine) Police Department shirts $10 OFF ready to order now,” and includes a link, that recipients of the text message should definitely not click.
By 5 p.m., a half-dozen people reported receiving the text message on their phones. None had fallen for the scam.
A day earlier, the police Facebook page contained a link that took users to what appeared to be a Chinese porn site. The link has since been removed. It was unclear whether that scam was related to the bogus shirt offer.
