Andre Emile Marichal

LEWISTON – Andre Emile Marichal, 91, of Lewiston, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Clover Manor Nursing Home in Auburn where he had been a resident for the last year, with his family close by his side.

He was born August 27, 1930, the son of Jean Marichal and Marquerite Humbert in Laneuveville, France. World War II began when he was only 9 years old and highly impacted his childhood. Despite the odds, he finished high school and trade school as a trained auto mechanic.

Andre arrived with his parents in the United States May 19, 1949 relocating to Lewiston. With limited English he started a job at Maine Baking where he met his beloved future wife, Eveline T. Bedard. They were married April 19, 1952 at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Andre earned his U.S. citizenship Sept. 8, 1955.

Andre worked as a millwright at International Paper for 25 years as well as a ship fitter at Bath Iron Works. In addition, he was a very skilled automotive mechanic holding many other job positions at other local businesses. Following his retirement, Andre was known for his ability to fix anything and being a jack of all trades. He spent many years as a volunteer at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Those closest to him will remember his love for family. He was known for cooking large family meals of traditional French cuisine including Christmas dinner. No one could meet his precision with gift wrapping. His pastimes include traveling the U.S. with his wife and family, mostly by car. He was never in a hurry but always early. Andre was always available to help his family and friends. As he aged, he enjoyed relaxing in sunshine outside and watching the History Channel.

Andre was proud to be an American and was known for flying the flag everyday at his home. He was often quoted to say, “I’m lucky, I’ve had a good life.”

Survivors include three sons and a daughter, Claude and wife, Rolinda, of Lewiston, Suzanne Lussier and husband John, of Lewiston, Paul and wife, Brenda, of Poland, and Michel and wife, Jane, of Appleton, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Eric Marichal and his wife Stephanie, Sheena Marichal-Carrier and her husband Dustin Carrier, Heather Marichal, Justin Lussier, Katherine Marichal, Marissa Lussier, and Michael Marichal; and four great-grandchildren, Sofie Marichal, Declan Carrier, Josephine Marichal, and Everly Carrier.
