ST. LOUIS — Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong both homered and drove in four runs apiece to help the St. Louis Cardinals outlast the New York Yankees 12-9 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.

St. Louis won its season-high seventh straight in a slugfest that took 4 hours, 25 minutes – the longest nine-inning game in the majors this season.

DJ LeMahieu homered for the Yankees, who have lost five in a row. It’s their worst skid since a seven-game slide last September.

New York still has the best record in the American League, but its lead in the AL East is down to 9 1/2 games over Toronto – the first time it’s been below 10 games since June 15.

PIRATES 8, ORIOLES 1: Bryse Wilson pitched effectively into the sixth inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes homered and Pittsburgh snapped Baltimore’s five-game winning streak.

The Pirates also ended a nine-game skid at Camden Yards, improving to 2-11 at the ballpark. Wilson (2-6) allowed a run and four hits in five-plus innings.

GIANTS 6, ATHLETICS 4: Mike Yastrzemski homered twice, Thairo Estrada also connected and San Francisco won its seventh consecutive interleague road game.

Logan Webb bounced back from his worst outing of the season, allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

GUARDIANS 1, ASTROS 0: Triston McKenzie held Houston to two hits and struck out eight in eight innings, Luke Maile homered for the first time in three years, and Cleveland won at home.

McKenzie (8-8) retired 15 straight hitters before pinch-hitter Kyle Tucker walked with one out in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Jose Altuve then bounced into an inning-ending double play, and McKenzie let out a yell and pounded his right hand into his glove as he headed to dugout behind a loud ovation from 22,688 fans.

McKenzie walked one and threw 91 pitches. He struck out Alex Bregman to begin the second, but Trey Mancini and Chas McCormick followed with one-out singles to put runners at first and second. McKenzie struck out Mauricio Dubón and Jake Meyers to end the inning.

BLUE JAYS 3, TWINS 2: Cavan Biggio hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, with Whit Merrifield scoring on an overturned call, to lift Toronto to a win in Minneapolis.

Merrifield was called out at the plate, but the call was reversed after Twins catcher Gary Sanchez was deemed to have interfered with Merrifield, whose right foot collided with Sanchez’s left leg as he slid into home.

Toronto remained two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild card in the American League. Minnesota’s lead over Cleveland in the AL Central shrank to one game.

MARINERS 6, ANGELS 3: Jesse Winker hit a grand slam, Marco Gonzales struck out seven and Seattle won at home.

Winker’s slam put Seattle up 5-1 and helped the Mariners stay in third in the AL wild-card race. Eugenio Suárez added two hits and drove in a run.

RAYS 7, TIGERS 0: Tampa Bay scored seven runs in the ninth inning, with two batters drawing bases-loaded walks, to win at Detroit.

Brandon Lowe made it 4-0 with a two-run single, Randy Arozarena added a two-run double and Roman Quinn followed with an RBI single.

WHITE SOX 8, RANGERS 2: Andrew Vaughn belted a two-run home run among his three hits, Luis Robert hit a two-run double, and AJ Pollock had two doubles in a three-hit game as Chicago earned a split of the four-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Leury Garcia had three hits and scored twice, and Jose Abreu had three singles as the White Sox broke out for 15 hits after being limited to four runs and 13 hits in the previous three games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

METS 5, BRAVES 2: Jacob deGrom struck out 12 and carried a perfect game into the sixth inning of his second start this season, pitching New York past visiting Atlanta for its 12th victory in 14 games.

Pete Alonso drove in two runs as the Mets extended their NL East lead to 61/2 games over the defending World Series champion Braves.

DODGERS 4, PADRES 0: Cody Bellinger hit two homers, Tyler Anderson allowed two hits over seven sparkling innings and Los Angeles completed a statement-making sweep of visiting San Diego.

Freddie Freeman had two RBI singles in the major league-leading Dodgers’ eighth consecutive victory and their 30th in 35 games.

The Dodgers’ sweep was a strong reply to San Diego’s bold moves at the trade deadline to acquire Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury. After largely standing pat at the deadline, Los Angeles opened up a 15 1/2-game lead in the NL West while outscoring the second-place Padres by a combined 20-4 in three victories at Chavez Ravine.

PHILLIES 13, NATIONALS 1: Darick Hall hit two home runs and Nick Maton and Rhys Hoskins each hit two-run homers as Philadelphia completed a four-game sweep at home.

Maton drove in four runs, Bryson Stott had three RBI, and the Phillies scored five runs in the fourth and eighth innings.

REDS 4, BREWERS 2: Donovan Solano drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as Cincinnati won at Milwaukee.

Willy Adames and Keston Hiura homered for the Brewers. Hiura’s solo shot in the ninth tied the game.

MARLINS 3, CUBS 0: Jesus Luzardo allowed one hit over seven innings for his first win since April, and Jacob Stallings and Peyton Burdick hit back-to-back home runs as Miami prevented a three-game sweep in Chicago.

Yan Gomes singled with two outs in the fifth off Luzardo (3-4). Nick Madrigal’s leadoff single in the ninth against Tanner Scott was Chicago’s only other hit.

DIAMONBACKS 6, ROCKIES 4: Daulton Varsho jogged home with the go-ahead run on a balk, Christian Walker clubbed a two-run homer and Arizona rallied for a win at home.

NOTES

WHITE SOX: All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson had his suspension for making contact with an umpire late last month cut from three to two games.

Anderson sat out the afternoon game at the Texas Rangers to begin the suspension, which will end with the first game of a doubleheader at Kansas City on Tuesday. Leury Garcia, primarily a second baseman, was in Sunday’s starting lineup at shortstop.

Major League Baseball suspended Anderson for making contact on July 29 with plate umpire Nick Mahrley during an argument.

TWINS: Outfielder Alex Kirilloff will undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist. Kirilloff, a 2016 first-round draft pick, will travel with Minnesota on its road trip to Los Angeles and undergo ulnar shortening surgery on Tuesday.

BRAVES: Atlanta optioned struggling right-hander Ian Anderson to Triple-A Gwinnett prior to its series finale with the New York Mets.

Anderson, 24, has been a key member of the Braves’ rotation over the last three seasons, posting a 21-13 record and 3.99 ERA in 51 starts. He also has been a force in the postseason, going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA over eight playoff starts, including a victory over the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the 2021 World Series.

This season, Anderson has struggled. He has a 5.11 ERA over 21 starts and was tied for the major league lead with 53 walks

PHILLIES: Pete Rose dismissed questions about his first appearance on the field in Philadelphia since the franchise scrapped 2017 plans to honor him because of a woman’s claim she had a sexual relationship with baseball’s hit king when she was a minor.

“It was 55 years ago, babe,” Rose told a female baseball writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Rose’s already stained reputation suffered another blow in 2017 when the Phillies called off a planned induction into the team’s Wall of Fame because of the sexual misconduct accusations levied against him. Rose brusquely responded to the reporter’s question before the game – and later apologized to her following Sunday’s ceremony after initially saying, “will you forgive me if I sign 1,000 baseballs for you?” – and was just as combative on the topic after the pregame celebration.
