Fire ripped through a large barn in Gorham late Tuesday night, endangering dairy cattle housed inside the structure off Flaggy Meadow Road.

Sara Mower and her husband, Cody, live across the street from the Flaggy Meadow Farm. Cody Mower tried to help move cattle out of the burning barn.

Mower, who took a photograph of the fire, said she believed there were 7 to 10 cows in the barn and that not all survived. Most of the herd were in the fields surrounding the barn and were likely not harmed, she said.

“The whole barn is gone. It’s collapsed,” Mower said. “It’s just devastating.”

A dispatcher for the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center confirmed that the barn at 160 Flaggy Meadow Road was on fire. Crews were still battling the blaze late Tuesday.

A nearby residence did not appear to be damaged. According to town tax records, the colonial-style six-bedroom home at 160 Flaggy Meadow Road was built in 1800.

The communications center issued an alert late Tuesday urging motorists to avoid using Flaggy Meadow Road between Route 112 and Davis Annex. Firefighters from several neighboring towns, including Westbrook, Windham, Buxton, Standish and Gray, provided mutual aid.
