PHILADELPHIA — Edward Cabrera pitched effectively into the sixth inning, Tanner Scott worked in and out of trouble in the ninth, and the Miami Marlins ended the Philadelphia Phillies’ seven-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory on Thursday.

Scott struck out pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto with two men on to end the eighth. In the ninth, he loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but he struck out Edmundo Sosa and Matt Vierling and got Brandon Marsh to weakly ground out, earning his 16th save in a 39-pitch outing.

Cabrera (3-1) struck out six and walked two in 5 2/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a seven-hitter.

The Phillies were coming off arguably their best win of the season, when they rallied with three runs in the eighth inning against NL ERA leader Sandy Alcantara to beat the Marlins, 4-3. NL home run leader Kyle Schwarber had three hits and drove in two runs in Wednesday night’s game.

Schwarber was pulled Thursday for a pinch runner after he walked with two outs in the fifth. The team said after the game he had a mild right calf strain.

The Phillies, who hold the second NL wild-card spot, finished their homestand 6-1 and are 12-2 in their last 14 games as they prepare for a weekend series at the NL East-leading New York Mets.

ASTROS 7, RANGERS 3: Framber Valdez threw seven shutout innings, Martin Maldonado and Alex Bregman homered with three RBI each, and Houston won at home.

The Astros (72-41) moved one-half game ahead of the slumping New York Yankees for the AL’s best record.

Valdez (11-4) allowed four singles and struck out eight to get his third straight win.

INDIANS 4, TIGERS 3: Oscar Gonzalez knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the 10th inning and Cleveland extended its winning streak to five games with a victory at Detroit.

Gonzalez’s hit off Gregory Soto (2-7) allowed the Guardians to escape after they squandered a two-run lead in the ninth.

ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 3: Zack Greinke worked out of trouble to hold Chicago scoreless into the seventh inning, and Kansas City won at home.

Greinke allowed nine hits but didn’t walk a batter, striking out five while throwing 95 pitches in 6 1/3 innings.

ROCKIES 8, CARDINALS 6: Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon hit back-to-back home runs in a six-run seventh inning, and Colorado held off visiting St. Louis to secure its first series win since the All-Star break.

The Rockies overcame three more hits from Paul Goldschmidt, including his 27th home run, to improve to 7-14 since July 22.

Former Rockies slugger Nolan Arenado hit his 24th home run to extend his hitting streak to nine games, but struck out looking with two on in the ninth to end it for the Cardinals.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, PIRATES 3: Emmanuel Rivera homered and hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to help blow open a close game, and Arizona won at home.

ASTROS: Manager Dusty Baker returned Thursday for the finale of a series against the Texas Rangers following a five-game absence after testing positive for COVID-19.

Baker, 73, said he never felt bad and had only mild symptoms that he attributed to seasonal allergies before testing positive.

“I’m very fortunate that I had both my shots and the two boosters,” he said. “So, I’m really hoping that everybody goes and gets the shots and boosters, because if you do get (COVID-19) hopefully it’s mild like mine was.”

Baker tested positive on Friday when the team was in Cleveland. He isolated in his hotel room all weekend and did not return to Houston with the team on Sunday night.

He returned to Houston on a private jet Monday but wasn’t cleared to return to the dugout until Thursday.
