TORONTO — Teoscar Hernández hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning, Matt Chapman also connected and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Cleveland 2-1 Saturday, halting the Guardians’ season-high winning streak at six.

Hernández reached base twice as the Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak, righting themselves after an 8-0 loss Friday that followed two defeats at Baltimore.

“Bouncing back from the game yesterday is huge,” Hernández said.

Cleveland, the AL Central leaders, lost for the third time in 10 games.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his career-best hitting streak to 22 games with a double in the first. Guerrero has the longest active hitting streak in the majors.

RAYS 8, ORIOLES 2: All-Star Shane McClanahan stopped a two-start losing streak, working six solid innings as Tampa Bay moved back in front of Baltimore in the AL wild-card race with a victory in St. Petersburg, Florida.

McClanahan (11-5) gave up two runs, seven hits and three walks and had five strikeouts to help the Rays improve to 8-12 since the All-Star break.

Jose Siri had three hits and scored three runs, including on Taylor Walls’ two-run homer in the eighth.

WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 4: Andrew Vaughn hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning for the second consecutive night, AJ Pollock homered in the eighth and Chicago won at home.

Vaughn had three hits for the White Sox, who moved within 2 1/2 games of AL Central leader Cleveland.

Liam Hendriks worked around Kerry Carpenter’s first major league hit and a walk in the ninth for the closer’s 25th save in 28 chances.

ASTROS 8, ATHLETICS 0: Lance McCullers Jr. pitched six shutout innings in his season debut, Alex Bregman homered and Trey Mancini had three hits as Houston won at home.

McCullers allowed two hits, struck out five and walked four, tossing 47 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

RANGERS 7, MARINERS 4: Corey Seager matched a career high with his 26th homer and rookie Bubba Thompson drove in a run with a squeeze bunt as Texas overcame an early deficit to beat visiting Seattle.

Texas trailed 3-0 before a four-run outburst in the fourth inning against Marco Gonzalez (7-12), capped by Thompson’s bunt pushed to the right side as Charlie Culberson crossed home plate.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

BRAVES SWEEP MARLINS: Ronald Acuña homered on the first pitch of the game, Matt Olson hit his 24th homer and Atlanta swept a doubleheader at Miami.

Rookie Vaughn Grissom also went deep for the Braves, who won their fifth straight after losing four of five to the NL East-leading New York Mets.

In the first game, Chadwick Thompson doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs to lead Atlanta to a 5-2 win.

METS 1, PHILLIES 0: Jacob deGrom struck out 10 in six dominant innings and Edwin Díaz earned his 200th career save, helping New York win at home.

Pete Alonso hit an early RBI single as the NL East leaders improved to 31-9 following a loss and 10-4 in the season series with Philadelphia. Alonso leads the NL with 97 RBI.

BREWERS 3, CARDINALS 2: Hunter Renfroe tripled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and St. Louis wasted a magnificent start by Adam Wainwright, falling to visiting Milwaukee.

Milwaukee moved within a half-game of NL Central-leading St. Louis, ending the Cardinals’ nine-game home winning streak.

Wainwright took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in his nine-inning, 109-pitch outing.

NATIONALS 4, PADRES 3: Last-place Washington scored the go-ahead run thanks to an overruled call on a play at the plate in a win over visiting San Diego.

Playing their second game since learning of Fernando Tatis’ steroid suspension, the Padres built a 3-0 lead with the help of solo homers from Manny Machado and Trent Grisham. But Yu Darvish (10-6) gave away that edge on back-to-back home runs by Yadiel Hernandez and Joey Meneses in the sixth.

CUBS 7, REDS 2: Ian Happ, Willson Contreras and Franmil Reyes homered, and Chicago won at Cincinnati.

Happ hit an RBI single in the fifth inning and a three-run shot in the seventh, continuing his long run of success at Cincinnati. The All-Star outfielder, who starred at the University of Cincinnati before he was selected by Chicago in the first round of the 2015 amateur draft, has 16 career homers at Great American Ball Park.

INTERLEAGUE

DODGERS 13, ROYALS 3: Max Muncy had a homer and four RBI, Mookie Betts hit his team-leading 26th home run of the season and Los Angeles extended its winning streak to 12 games with a victory at Kansas City.

Muncy went 4 for 5, including his 14th homer of the season – a two-run shot to right field in the fourth inning. Betts led off the game with a homer as part of a five-run first inning.

The Dodgers’ winning streak is the third-longest in the majors this season. It is the first time since 1976 that Los Angeles has run off a dozen straight.

NOTES

PADRES: Manager Bob Melvin reached out to suspended All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. in a phone call and said the player “feels remorseful.”

Melvin did not reveal anything else about what he termed a “private conversation” with Tatis, the dynamic fan favorite whose 80-game ban for testing positive for a performance-enhancing anabolic steroid, Clostebol, was announced by Major League Baseball shortly before the start of San Diego’s 10-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday.

The first-year Padres skipper said he did not feel the need to discuss the Tatis suspension with other players again before Saturday’s game at Nationals Park.

Asked by a reporter whether he would want Tatis to speak to his teammates about what happened, Melvin replied: “I don’t know where and when that would potentially happen, so I’m not sure at this point.”

Some Padres players were critical in their comments after Friday’s game, including pitcher Mike Clevinger, who talked about being “disappointed” in Tatis and hoping the shortstop realizes “it’s about more than just him right now.”

A talented hitter and fielder, Tatis led the National League with 42 home runs last season, pairing with third baseman Manny Machado to give the Padres a feared middle of the order. But Tatis had not played at all in 2022 because he broke his left wrist in the offseason – in what is believed to have been a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic.

Tatis had surgery in mid-March and had been expected to join the Padres soon to help them make a push for an NL wild-card berth. They’re currently third in the race for one of those three spots. San Diego entered Saturday’s game against Washington with a record of 64-51.
