NBA: The league’s schedule for the coming season will have all 30 teams playing on Nov. 7, the night before the midterm elections. The NBA is hoping teams use that night as an opportunity to encourage fans to get out and vote, plus amplify the need for civic engagement.

But on Nov. 8, which is Election Day, no NBA teams have games scheduled. Teams are being encouraged to share election information – such as registration deadlines – with their fan bases in the weeks leading up to Nov. 8.

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Serena Williams fell to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career, losing 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu at Mason, Ohio.

The 40-year-old Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down, although she did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament.

The Cincinnati event was the second U.S. Open tuneup for Williams, and the next time she takes the court will be at Flushing Meadows. She lost to Belinda Bencic in straight sets last week in Toronto. A day before the announcement, Williams beat Nuria Parrizas-Diaz for her first match win since the 2021 French Open.

Williams briskly left the court after the 1-hour, 5-minute match against Raducanu, waving to the crowd as she exited.

Earlier, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was eliminated by Shuai Zhang, 6-4, 7-5.

The tournament outside Cincinnati lost another big name, Coco Gauff, when she retired from her match against qualifier Marie Bouzkova with a left ankle injury. Gauff had her ankle taped after the first set and dropped out after the first game of the second set.

Karolina Pliskova advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Venus Williams.

Rafael Nadal, sidelined since withdrawing from Wimbledon with an abdominal tear, practiced before a large crowd. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is scheduled to play a second-round match on Wednesday.

In a men’s first-round match, Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5, 6-4.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Two glaring misses then a red card for a reckless headbutt.

It was a home debut to forget for Liverpool’s big offseason signing, Darwin Nunez.

Fortunately for the Reds, another South American came to the rescue at Anfield as a dazzling individual goal by Luis Diaz salvaged a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Liverpool, England.

In his first competitive start for Liverpool, Nunez lost control after jostling with Joachim Andersen off the ball and thrust his head into the face of the Palace defender, with referee Paul Tierney watching on close by in the 57th minute.

The red card was immediately brandished and Nunez had to be calmed down by his teammates as he attempted to confront Tierney. Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp blanked Nunez as the Uruguay striker headed down the tunnel.

Wilfried Zaha scored for Crystal Palace in the 32nd minute.

DORTMUND: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, the latest exciting young prospect to emerge at the club, has his contract extended to June 2025, warding off any potential suitors who may have noticed his impact already. His previous deal at Dortmund ran till 2023.

BOOKS: ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has a memoir coming out next year.

13A, an imprint of Gallery Books, announced Smith’s “Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes” is scheduled for January 2023.

According to 13A, Smith will share stories about growing up poor in New York City, his early years in journalism and his long history of speaking his mind – to a fault – about sports (the Cowboys are a favorite target) and a wide of range of issues, including comments about domestic violence that led to ESPN’s briefly suspending him in 2014.

“This book is a long time coming. Due to my fixation on privacy pertaining to my personal life, it took a lot of time, and a lot of prodding by loved ones, to finally get me to do this,” Smith said in a statement.

“But as I once told my Mom, `if I’m going to write a book, I’ll be damned if I’m holding back. I’m going to speak my truth, say what I have to say, just so everyone knows where I stand and why.’ I know I’ve done that in this book. I had to do so eventually. It was time. No matter the consequences.”
