100 Years Ago: 1922

The historic Maine State fairgrounds is the scene of much activity, great preparations being made for the 61st exhibition Sept. 4-8.

Work is progressing rapidly on the 100 foot square addition to the exhibition building which is being built by the Lewiston-Auburn Automobile Dealers Association The huge grandstand which was found to be in a badly decomposed condition has been thoroughly renovated, the race course newly renovated along the track itself newly surfaced.

50 Years Ago: 1972

A Lewiston businessman is expected to appear before the Auburn City Council Monday night to request the purchase of the property on Spring Street, the former location of the Auburn Highway Department garage, according to the agenda released by city Clerk Leroy Linnell.

John Mosho, who formerly owned Whiterock Distilleries Inc. of Lewiston, is seeking to buy the land located at the intersection of Elm Street.

The old highway garage was demolished this summer after AHD personnel moved into their new facilities on the Gracelawn Road. The lot has been vacant since then.

25 Years Ago: 1997

(from a Sun-Journal photo) Camp Agassiz Village in West Poland is hosting 235 disadvantaged and handicapped kids from inner-city Boston for two weeks this summer. The children participate in arts, crafts and camping activities culminating in a carnival day. The 450-acre camp located on Thompson Lake is funded by the United Way and private donations. Kate Philbin and Michelle Whitney feast on banana splits prepared by volunteers from the H.P. Hood Company. Randy Johnson of Boyston, Mass shares a  smile and some cotton candy with Clyde Brennin, also known as P.C. The Clown.
