100 Years Ago: 1922

A.H. Damon, an Auburn contractor, has been awarded a contract for remodeling the top floor of the old Edward Little High School building into four up-to-date classrooms.

The placing of the contract followed the meeting of the school board and manager and the Mayor were present Monday night. An extreme effort will be made to have the building ready by September 13, or one week after the usual date for opening the fall term.

Manager Haskell will inspect the work to ensure adherence to the schedule.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Two young women from Lewiston will be among 11 competitors from all over the state of Maine for the title of Miss Sweet Corn which will be awarded this weekend at the Sweet Corn Festival being held at Skowhegan.

Miss Lorna St. Armand, a 17-year-old High school senior, and Miss Colleen Parker, a sophomore at the University of Maine, are among those entered in the competition. Miss St. Armand has previously participated in the Miss World Pageant and enjoys sewing, cooking, sports and people. Miss Parker, a fashion merchandising major in college lists her hobbies as dancing, cooking, handicrafts and making unusual tables.

Miss Cheryl Campbell of Skowhegan is coordinator and director of the pageant, which is the first for the Skowhegan Chamber of Commerce.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Julia Rifkin, 15, of North Line Road, Greene, is a Landmark Volunteer in Lincolnville. She is a member of a team that was to create an interpretive nature trail in wooded and meadow areas at Kelmscott Farm. Kelmscott is dedicated to the preservation of rare and endangered breeds of farm animals.

Rifkin, who will be a sophomore at Hebron Academy in the fall, plays soccer and lacrosse in addition to being a member of the ski team. She enjoys canoeing and kayaking as a member of the Outdoor Club and participates in Green Key, an outdoor guide program through the school. She is a Junior Maine Guide, having passed the test course offered at Swan Island.
