Auburn library gears up for fall programming

The Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., plans the following fall programming.

The Library Book Store is set to reopen Saturday, Sept. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Hundreds of books have been restocked and reorganized; they range from 25 cents to $2.

Preserving the Harvest: Canning & Freezing Basics is planned for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30. This home food preservation demonstration teaches the basic steps for canning and freezing. Participants will receive home food preservation fact sheets, and can learn recommended methods for preserving foods, the latest and safest recipes, equipment and ensuring safety, and how to check for properly sealed jars.

Participants may bring their own pressure canner dial gauge to class for a free accuracy test. This program will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room; registration is required.

A presentation, “Paris & Parisians” with Jayne Boisvert, is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the Androscoggin Community Room. The program is the title of the second guidebook in Boisvert’s Cheapo Snob series.

She will offer information on finding lodging and restaurants to suit many pocketbooks, and discuss attractions found in the capital like the Opera Garnier and the Pantheon, as well as the Château de Fontainebleau, found outside the city limits.

The library recommends that visitors wear a mask. Restrictions on the number of people and the length of time spent in the building have been lifted, and the library is no longer requiring appointments for computer use or browsing. There is reduced seating, and some services are limited.

In addition to the return of walk-in computer use, the media lab and computer lab have been reopened, with some limitations on use of these areas. Study rooms are available, with appointments suggested, but walk-ins are accepted as space permits. The Teen Room also is open with limited capacity.

The Children’s Room is open with no appointment necessary, but toys and crafts will not be available and seating is limited. Some computers are available for use.

Curbside service and book drops remain open 24/7.
