BOXING

Portland Boxing Club owner and coach Bobby Russo was inducted into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame earlier this month in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Russo, currently the national president of Golden Gloves of America, has directed the Portland Boxing Club for more than 30 years. He’s also the executive director of New England Golden Gloves, and a 2013 inductee into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

• Kate Zehr of South Portland won her opening match in the elite featherweight division (125 pounds) at the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before losing a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals to Hainite Tuitupou of Lansing, Michigan.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Christian Koss homered with two outs in the sixth inning as the Portland Sea Dogs earned a doubleheader split with a 2-1 win over the Hartford Yard Goats at Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs were held to a total of six hits – three in each game. Portland’s other run in Game 2 came on an error. In Game 1, Niko Kavadas hit his first Double-A home run for the Sea Dogs, but Hartford won 2-1 in nine innings.

Jacob Wallace got the win in the nightcap with two hitless innings in relief of Thad Ward, who struck out 10 and allowed only three hits in five innings.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Cohen Sakamoto struck out seven and Ruston Hiyoto hit a two-run homer as Hawaii continued its run through the Little League World Series with 5-1 win over Tennessee to advance to the championship game in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Hawaii will play for the title Sunday against Curacao, 1-0 winners over Taiwan in the international bracket final.

GOLF

LAWSUIT: Saudi-funded LIV Golf has joined the antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour in an amended complaint in which four players have removed their names.

That leaves seven players, most notably Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, along with LIV Golf as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The four who withdrew their names are Carlos Ortiz, Abraham Ancer, Pat Perez and Jason Kokrak.

The amended complaint was filed Friday afternoon in the U.S. District Court in Northern California. Three players still on the lawsuit – Matt Jones, Talor Gooch and Hudson Swafford – previously sought a temporary restraining order to played in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The judge denied their request two weeks ago.

The lawsuit claims the PGA Tour has used monopoly power to try to squash competition and has unfairly suspended players.

LPGA: Hye-Jin Choi shot a 5-under 66 to join fellow South Korean rookie Narin An atop the leaderboard in the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in Ottawa, Ontario.

Choi matched second-round leader An at 16-under 197 at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. An had a 68.

First-round leader Paula Reto of South Africa was a stroke back after a 67.

SENIOR WOMEN’S OPEN: Laura Davies shot a 5-under 68 for a share of the third-round lead with Helen Alfredsson in the the U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Kettering, Ohio.

Davies, the 58-year-old English star who won the inaugural event in 2018 at Chicago Golf Club, eagled the par-5 16th and had three birdies in a bogey-free round. She matched Aldredsson at 4-under 215 on NCR Country Club’s South Course.

Aldredsson, the 57-year-old Swede who won the 2019 title, had a 75.

Annika Sorenstam, the winner last year at Brooklawn, was a stroke back with Jill McGill and Leta Lindley. Sorenstam shot 73, McGill 71 and Lindley 75.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Scott Dunlap birdied five of the final six holes for a 9-under 63 and the second-round lead in The Ally Challenge at Grand Blanc, Michigan.

Dunlap, 59, had nine birdies in the bogey-free round to reach 11-under 133 at Warwick Hills. He won his lone senior title in the 2014 Boeing Classic.

Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington and Brett Quigley were a stroke back. Stricker shot 64, Harrington 66 and Quigley 68.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Thriston Lawrence carded a 67 in the third round after earlier completing a 64 in the weather-delayed second round as he opened a three-stroke lead at the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Lawrence was at 17 under overall, three ahead of Matt Wallace.

AUTO RACING

CUP SERIES: The NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway was rained out Saturday night and rescheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday.

The 400-mile race, the regular-season finale that will decide the last two playoff spots, will air on CNBC.

XFINITY: Jeremy Clements won a crash-filled Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway for his second career victory and first since 2017.

This one came after two multicar melees in overtime and gave him an automatic berth in the postseason. Clements passed Austin Hill on the final restart, thanks to a big push from Sage Karam, and cruised to the checkered flag.

Hill looked poised to sweep both Xfinity races at Daytona, but his car seemed to have fuel and electrical issues during the final caution. When the green flag dropped, Clements and Karam flew past Hill on the outside.

Timmy Hill finished second, followed by points leader AJ Allmendinger, Brandon Brown and Karam.

FORMULA ONE: Carlos Sainz Jr. will start from the pole Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix because runaway points leader Max Verstappen was among the many drivers to be hit with grid penalties.

Sainz was actually second fastest to Verstappen in qualifying, but the reigning world champion will drop to 15th ahead of the start. Verstappen otherwise would have won his fourth pole of the season and 17th of his career.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Liverpool rebounded from a dispiriting loss to its archrival and finally earned its first win of the Premier League season, equaling the record for its biggest ever victory by trouncing Bournemouth, 9-0.

Roberto Firmino scored two goals and set up three more for Liverpool, which opened its campaign with two draws and a loss.

• Manchester City found itself trailing by two goals for the second straight game, but Erling Haaland netted a second-half hat trick in a 4-2 win at home against Crystal Palace.

• Arsenal needed a late comeback against Fulham to remain the only team yet to drop points, as defender Gabriel made up for a defensive howler that gifted Fulham the lead by scoring an 86th-minute winner.

• Chelsea overcame the early sending off of Conor Gallagher to beat Leicester 2-1 at Stamford Bridge behind two goals from Raheem Sterling.

• Manchester United made it back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since February by beating Southampton 1-0 on the road, thanks to a second-half goal by Bruno Fernandes.

GERMANY: Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a record 19 saves and his team gave the Bundesliga a sliver of hope by holding Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw.

HORSE RACING

TRAVERS STAKES: Favored Epicenter stormed down the stretch past his rivals and won the 153rd running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.

The runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Epicenter, with Joel Rosario aboard, won his second stakes in a month at Saratoga and covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2 minutes, 0.72 seconds, easily beating Cyberknife and Zandon to capture the $1.25 million Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds on a picture-perfect day. Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike was fourth.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: Ryan Hilinski threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns to help Northwestern rally for a 31-28 victory over Nebraska in a season opener in Dublin.

Northwestern handed the Cornhuskers their seventh consecutive loss going back to last season and added more pressure on embattled Nebraska Coach Scott Frost, who took the blame for a failed onside kick that changed the momentum of the game in the third quarter.

Northwestern finished with 527 yards and gained a measure of revenge after a humiliating 56-7 loss to the Huskers last October. Nebraska hasn’t won since.

TENNIS

WTA: Liudmila Samsonova of Russia won her second straight WTA Tour title, beating seventh-seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match of Tennis in The Land at Cleveland.

Samsonova, ranked No. 45 in the world, did not lose a set in five matches at the U.S. Open tuneup.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Australian Jay Vine won his second Vuelta stage, two days after overcoming a flat tire to take his first win at a Grand Tour race.

Vine impressed on the grueling final climb to beat Marc Soler, Rein Taaramae and Thibaut Pinot by more than 40 seconds in a foggy eighth stage in northern Spain.

Remco Evenepoel kept the leader’s red jersey by crossing the line in fifth place. Overall, Evenepoel is 28 seconds in front of Enric Mas and 61 seconds ahead of three-time defending champion Primoz Roglic.
