Employees of Hammond Lumber Co. hold a 2022 Best Places to Work in Maine banner, recognizing the honor bestowed by the Best Companies Group.

For the second year in a row Hammond Lumber Co. has recently been recognized as one of the 2022 Best Places to Work in Maine.

This statewide survey and awards program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Maine, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses.

The 2022 Best Places to Work in Maine list is made up of 100 companies in three size categories: 34 small winners (15-49 employees), 45 medium winners (50-249 employees) and 21 large winners (250+ employees).

Hammond is one of the 21 winners in the large employer category with 875 employees in Maine and New Hampshire. Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the best places to work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. This part of the process counted for about 25% of the total evaluation.

The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process counted for about 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Maine and analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

Hammond is the largest lumber and building materials retailer throughout Maine and New Hampshire and the 21st largest lumber and building materials dealer in the country, according to the 2022 LBM Journal 100.

It was founded in 1953 by Skip and Verna Hammond with a single sawmill in Belgrade. There are 21 locations in Maine and one in New Hampshire.
