A field of 55 golfers participated Saturday in the first James W. McKinney Jr Memorial Golf Tournament at the Paris Hills Country Club to raise money for McKinney’s favorite cause — education.

McKinney had been the director of the Oxford Hills Technical School for 10 years when he died in June.

A number of his regular golfing partners decided to honor McKinney by blending golf and education, pursuits that consumed much of his time and talent.

The tournament, organized on short notice, raised about $3,000. Bob Ronan, treasurer of the non-profit memorial tournament committee, said the funds will be used to award five or six scholarships to graduating students at Oxford Hills High School.

The funds generated during the annual golf tournament will be kept separate from funds donated to a scholarship fund established immediately after McKinney’s death, Ronan said, to organize the event, including obtaining numerous donations from local businesses. Among them, Wayne Albert donated a 24-carat-gold-putter, which was awarded to Terry Cambell for striking the longest drive in the men’s category. Barbara Olson won the longest drive in the women’s category.
