Charles M. Smith

FARMINGTON – Charles M. Smith, 74, of Carthage, gained his angel wings on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at the Sandy River Center in Farmington. He was born in Farmington, July 19, 1948, the youngest of 10 children of Hamlin and Ruth (Sprague) Smith and received his education in Jay schools. He was 19 when Uncle Sam invited his presence in the military. After basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., he was deployed to Vietnam for over a year and was honorably discharged in 1970.

He worked as a boiler tender at Forster, Mfg. Co. until their closing and later at Irving’s. On Sept. 15, 1990, his parents’ anniversary, he married Edna Pulk of Carthage and they went on to build their home in Carthage. In his spare-time, he enjoyed woodworking, shooting at the rifle range, and watching the birds, bear, and deer at his feeder as well as puttering around his home. He and Edna watched some kind of worship together often. One of the highlights of their life was driving cross-country and later to Texas to visit with a Vietnam buddy.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; son Bradley and his wife, Elizabeth; step-son, Scott; step-daughter, Kathleen; brother, Omer (Marie); sisters, Phyllis Cochran (Ken), Evelyn Conkey (Arlo), Joan Gray (Al), and Mary Jane Baker (Rocky); He was predeceased by brothers, Frank and Perley; and sisters, Ramona Dorr and Betty Nadeau.

Public graveside services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m., at the New Newman Cemetery in Carthage with a pot-luck gathering following services at Pulk Pond with U.S. Army honors at 1 p.m.
