100 Years Ago: 1922

With a frost early in the week, fashion turns a more concerned attention to fall styles than it might have otherwise. The warm heavy garments that are to be displayed at the openings tomorrow afternoon and evening in Lewiston stores seem very seasonable. More shops are to have style shows than usual and nearly every store, besides being all dressed up in its gala best will have fine musical programs.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Now that the mammoth Cushman-Hollis factory building has been demolished in Auburn, crews from the Stuart Construction Company of Cundy’s Harbor are grading the site. This work should be completed this week.

Monday the large storage tank located beneath School Street was hauled away. Part of the area will be utilized in connection with the Union Street By-Pass. It is not immediately known what will happen to the remainder of the land.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Community leaders in Rumford resumed work Thursday on a “monumental task,” creating a public memorial to native son Edmund S. Muskie. Meeting for the first time since December, members of the memorial’s steering committee seemed to agree that Rumford should create both a visual tribute, such as a statue, and a scholarship in Muskie’s name. Where to put the monument, though, is still open to suggestion. One proposal is the reflecting pool near the information center. Committee members will bring others to their next meeting Oct. 16.
