Sandra Ava Viger Hebert

DIXFIELD – Sandra Ava Viger Hebert, 67, died Friday Sept. 16, 2022, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was a resident of Dixfield.

Born in Rumford, on Sept. 27, 1954, she was a daughter of Wilfred “Chick” and Emma (Richardson) Viger. Sandra was a graduate of Rumford High School class of 1972.

She was married in Dixfield, Maine, on Jan. 20, 1978 to Christopher Hebert who survives of Dixfield. Other survivors include her children: Christi Wilson (Geremy) of Cabot, Pa., Donald (Jennie) of Dixfield, Daniel (Heather) of Oakdale, Tenn., C. Corey (Cassie) of Dixfield, and Jesse (Cindy) of Minot; 15 grandchildren: Owen, Gavin, Madeline, Ella, Emma, Reese, Paige, Jacoby, Emma, Evie Claire, Ava, Harper, Elijah, Reed, Ellie Grace; two great-grandchildren: Wren and Ruthie. She is also survived by her siblings: David Durham of Texas, Wilfred “Chick” Viger of Pennsylvania, Wayne Viger (Carolyn) of Turner, Roger (Cindy) Viger, Marlene Viger, and Brenda (Rodney) Howitt all of Rumford; special niece Michelle Viger of Dixfield, special nephew Bob Viger of Nevada; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, David and Robert, and her sister Louise.

Sandra exhibited the genuine spirit of a hardworking Mainer, having many vocations over the course of her lifetime. She worked as a nurse, real estate agent, and tax assessor before discovering her true calling in social work as a fierce and tireless advocate for the developmentally disabled. She touched many lives through her years of helping families obtain needed services and by performing wedding ceremonies as a justice of the peace. She devoted decades of passionate service to the Maine Special Olympics as a volunteer, coach, and aquatic program director, and spent the last several years in a clinical teaching role for the Michael Phelps Foundation.

Her husband Chris was the love of her life, and her grandchildren were her light. On any given weekend she could be found camping and fishing in remote spots around Maine, making smores around the fire, working barefoot in her gardens, or snuggled up with her grandchildren with popcorn and a movie. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her bright smile, kind words, and huge hugs.
