Football roundup: Lisbon ends Foxcroft’s streak; Lewiston rolls past Scarborough

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Lisbon took the lead in the fourth quarter and held on to defeat Foxcroft 14-13 and end the state’s longest active winning streak in a Class D football contest Friday.

Colby Levasseur scored 2-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1 from the Foxcroft 2-yard line, then quarterback Jimmy Fitzsimmons ran in the 2-point conversation to put the Greyhounds up 14-7 with 7:39 remaining in the game.

The Ponies (2-1) drove down and scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Wyatt Rayfield with 3:45 to play. The PAT went through the uprights, but Lisbon (2-2) was called for a penalty on the play. Foxcroft decided to instead go for 2, and for the lead, but the Greyhounds stuffed the run play to maintain their lead at 14-13.

The Ponies forced a turnover on downs with 1:45 left and then drove into the red zone, mostly via pass plays, but the Lisbon defense sacked Rayfield and then pressured him into an incompletion on fourth-and-15 to secure the win.

Lisbon had a pair of long drives in the first half that didn’t lead to any points. They finally got on the scoreboard when Josh Carter, who ran for 91 yards, capped another long drive with a 3-yard TD run on fourth down, cutting the Ponies’ lead to 7-6 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Foxcroft opened the scoring with a two-play drive, a 53-yard run by Cameron Chase and a 23-yard TD pass from Rayfield to Jadon Richard.

BONNY EAGLE 52, EDWARD LITTLE 48: Bonny Eagle (3-1) scored 18 points in the final nine minutes, including a touchdown with 48 seconds remaining, to overcome Edward Little (2-2) in Auburn.

The Red Eddies scored first before the Scots responded with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead late in the first quarter. A halfback pass from Gavin Therriault to Ben DuBois brought Edward Little within two points, then a scoring strike from Tate Morse to DuBois put the Eddies up 20-14.

The Red Eddies’ lead grew to 40-14 in the third quarter, and was still two touchdowns, 48-34, with 8:58 remaining in the game, but they couldn’t hold off the Scots.

OXFORD HILLS 28, PORTLAND 16: Jake Carson scored three of the undefeated Vikings’ (4-0) four touchdowns on short runs as they overpowered the Bulldogs (1-3) in Portland.

Oxford Hills, which is ranked first in the latest Varsity Maine football poll, jumped out to 20-0 lead at halftime, with Carson delivering a pair 3-yard touchdowns. Lincoln Merrill added another score when he snatched a 58-yard pass from quarterback Brady Truman and ran it in for a touchdown.

Carson’s third score was a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Truman completed 19 of his 29 passes for 303 yards. Teigan Pelletier caught seven of those passes and finished with 134 yards receiving. Merrill had three receptions for 77 yards and Tanner Bickford caught six passes for 48 yards.

Portland got on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a short touchdown run. The Bulldogs wrapped up the game’s scoring with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Louis Thurston to Wani Remi.

LEWISTON 39, SCARBOROUGH 7: Eli Bigelow made more big plays and the Blue Devils (2-2) took control in the second quarter to down the Red Storm (2-2) in a Class A clash in Lewiston.

Bigelow’s 40-yard run in the first quarter put Lewiston in front 8-7. The Blue Devils then outscored Scarborough 18-0 in the second period, as Bigelow bolted for a 74-yard touchdown run and Fareed Muhammed-Aceto scored twice, on runs of 13 and 4 yards.

“Just an amazing team effort. Eli Bigelow and Farid Muhammed-Aceto had tremendous performances behind a determined offensive line. Our kids showed great poise and discipline against a good Scarborough football club,” Lewiston coach Jason Versey said.

Bigelow scored twice more in the second half, a 46-yard pass from Jeffrey Randall in the third quarter and a 76-yard run in the fourth. He finished with 288 yards rushing on 13 carries, and 334 yards or total offense. Muhammed-Aceto finished with 101 yards on 15 carries.

Bigelow also recovered a fumble, which was forced by Joseph Dube. Dube also recovered a fumble and finished with seven tackles, including one for a loss. JJ Durr had two sacks and a pass breakups, Dylan Allen intercepted a pass and had five tackles, and Jayden Maynard finished with six tackles and a pass breakup. Muhammed-Aceto contributed seven tackles, one for a loss.

“Our entire defense, led by Joe Dube, Jaden Maynard, Farid Muhammad-Aceto and JJ Durr, held Scarborough’s prolific passing game to only seven points,” Versey said. “I am so proud of our guys and the way they responded to last week’s defeat against Leavitt. They showed a lot of grit and determination.”

The Red Storm opened the scoring with a 46-yard touchdown pass from De’Angelo Alston to Tom Hassett midway through the opening quarter.

LEAVITT 36, WELLS 0: Quarterback Noah Carpenter and Dayton Calder each scored two touchdowns to lead the Hornets (4-0) past the Warriors (3-1) in Wells.

Leavitt, which is tied for second in this week’s Varsity Maine football poll, jumped out 22-0 lead by halftime.

In the first quarter, Carpenter and Calder scored on 42- and 76-yard rushes, respectively. Carpenter scored on a 9-yard rush in the second quarter.

Calder crossed the goal line on a 15-yard run in the third quarter, and Carpenter tossed a TD pass to Brett Coburn.

The Hornets’ defense turned in a strong performance, forcing five turnovers, including three fumbles and interceptions by Braxton Rowe and Colten Taylor.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY 48, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 20: Robert Leveillee took the Falcons’ (4-0) first play from scrimmage 94 yards for a touchdown and Mountain Valley was off and running to an 8-man Small South victory over the Seagulls (2-2) in Rumford.

Lucas Libby and Kaden Paaso added first-quarter touchdown runs for Mountain Valley, which led 24-6 heading into the second quarter.

Libby, Leveillee (punt return) and Paaso each added a second touchdown in the second half. Jyrrmal Yates scored five two-point conversions for the Falcons, and Paaso also ran in a conversion.
