DEAR SUN SPOTS: When I read the Sept. 19 Sun Spots about the grandparent scam, I could totally relate. When I got a call about 7:30 a.m. one day a couple years ago, it seemed so real. The person calling sounded exactly like my grandson. He said, “Grandma? I hate to ask you, but I need your help!” The person was very upset and in a shaky voice explained he had gone to a concert with friends the night before and they got stopped on I-95 for “driving erratically.” The police searched the vehicle and “found my friend’s drugs under the seat.” He added, “I had no idea he had anything.” It did sound believable. He said he needed $1,600 for bail and “this is just between us — please don’t tell Mom and Dad.”

I was so upset and asked him if I could have five minutes to compose myself. I said, “Call me back, OK?” He said, “Of course,” and hung up. I quickly called my grandson’s mother and she said, “He didn’t go to any concert last night, he was here with us and just left for school.” She continued to reassure me that he was fine.

When the person called back, he said he had an attorney with him for me to talk to. I told him I was calling the police and he hung up immediately. — Leona, no town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Lisbon Falls Church of the Nazarene at 184 Main St. in Lisbon Falls will celebrate the fall season with a Ladies’ Tea on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m.

All ladies over the age of 11 are invited to join us for lunch, door prizes and a short program detailing Operation Christmas Child. The speaker will discuss how to fill a box,  where they are sent, and who receives them.
