I support Bettyann Sheats for state Senate; she is the best candidate for our district. She will listen to her constituents, and work effectively with Democrats, Republicans and independents.

On the other hand, her opponent, Eric Brakey, hung up on me when I called asking him to support legislation putting an affordable housing bond on the ballot. He was mad at me because I had written a letter to this paper disagreeing with his bill to eliminate permitting for concealed weapons.

It’s important for us to be able to communicate with our elected officials, whether we agree with each or not. I hope people vote for the candidate who listens: Bettyann Sheats.

The housing bond issue passed overwhelmingly, but Gov. Paul LePage would not issue the bonds for over two years. Gov. Janet Mills came into office and immediately issued the bonds, allowing construction of over 500 units of much-needed housing.
