Ed Garnier of Monmouth holds his Auburn Police Department patch and challenge coin Thursday given by Auburn Police Chief Jason Moen at the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association in Auburn. Garnier is a former member of the association who returns each year to help with the weeklong officer training and firearms certification for the Auburn police force. “We can’t wear the patch,” association member John Wilson said. “But I might put it on my hat just in case I get pulled over.” Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

John Wilson shakes hands Thursday with Auburn Police Chief Jason Moen after Moen gave him an Auburn Police Department patch and a challenge coin at the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association shooting range in Auburn. The tokens were in appreciation for use of the range for one week each year for officer training and firearms certification. Members also hold a cookout for the officers daily during the five-day training. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

Sgt. Matt Dailey, left, works Thursday morning with Lt. Jason Moore during an active shooter threat scenario at the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association range in Auburn. Members of the Auburn Police Department have been training this week for firearms certification. John Wilson of the association said the range has hosted the training for 15 years. The entire Auburn police force will participate this week, firing 28,000 rounds, Wilson said. Last year, members collected five five-gallon buckets of brass shell casings and sold them on the scrap market to raise money for hot dogs, burgers and chicken for this week’s cookouts for officers. “It’s one of the things we do for the community,” Wilson said.
