Marsha Asher Roy

WAYNE – Marsha Asher Roy of Wayne died at home on Sept 8, 2022 after outliving her prognosis, but losing her valiant battle with Progressive Prefrontal Aphasia, with her loving husband, Gregory, by her side as well as her long -term caregiver, Kim and her stepson, Cody.

Marsha was born in Winchester, Va. on Dec. 4, 1961 to Roy Asher and Evelyn B. (Warren) Asher. The family moved to Alabama where Marsha attended local schools graduating from Huffman High School. She went on to pursue and obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Trade from Auburn University in Montgomery, Ala.

She later moved to Marquette, Mich. and attended Northern Michigan University for two years before returning to Alabama and attending the University of Alabama Birmingham where she received her Masters degree in Applied Mathematics and worked as a Professor’s Assistant all while caring for her ailing mother until she passed away.

Marsha met and married Timothy Cook and they moved to Palmerdale, Ala. Together they had two sons, Liam and Eamon. While the boys were still young, Marsha moved to Maine and was hired by Bates College as a computer program analyst.

Marsha had been very athletic most of her life. She even rode horses and did barrel racing. After moving to Maine, she not only continued her athletic activities but expanded her scope. She attended Martial Arts classes at UMSF in Winthrop, Maine where she eventually earned her Black belt. Marsha also became one of the first persons in Maine to become certified in a Crossfit Program which she loved and practiced until her illness no longer allowed her to do so. It was while attending Karate classes that Marsha met Gregory Roy who she married in 2008.

In 2012, she was diagnosed with Progressive Prefrontal Aphasia that led to a whole new journey for Marsha. The discipline she’d applied in her athletic endeavors she applied as aggressively to fighting her illness. Marsha was a faithful participant in the’ Tri-For-a-Cure’ events for several years as she was a great swimmer, runner and cyclist. Marsha was also an ambitious, hard worker; a picture of health; big hearted; quick to laugh; loved deeply, especially her husband, sons and her dogs Smoke and Gypsy. She also loved a good lobster roll with onion rings; decadent chocolate; a great cup of coffee or blueberry tea; an occasional glass of fine wine; listening to music and shopping .

Marsha was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Gregory; her sons, Liam C. Cook and Eamon A. Cook and stepson, Cody J. Hinkley-Roy; her sister, Beverly (Timothy) Tisdale and nieces and nephews, Roxanne, Riana, Trenton, and Samuel Tisdale of Pinson, Ala.; and extended Roy family members who will miss her deeply.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Kim Hill, Marsha’s caregiver for almost four years; to the diligent staff from Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice; to the Aphasia Center of Maine where Marsha participated in many of the activities they offer.

A very special thank you posthumously, to my sister, Marie, for her support, dedication, encouragement, advice, love, and for providing respite care so graciously.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 12 to 4 at the Aphasia Center, 675 Old Portland Road, Brunswick, ME 04011. Family and friends are invited.
