Four-month-old Charlene goes on the auction block just before noon Friday, Her young owner, Jennifer Ramsdell, 14, of Denmark has worked with the lamb every day all summer, and this parting is simply the way it was supposed to be. After all, Charlene came through when it really counted. Jennifer and her Hampshire lamb captured first place in Thursday’s 4-H Market Lamb Fitting  Showmanship competition at the Fryeburg Fair. It was the second year in a row Jennifer has won the trophy.

“I’ve been doing this for a number of years now, so I’m starting to get used to giving up the lambs,” she said, “The trick is not to become too attached.” Jennifer has been a 4-H member for seven years and has been a consistent winner. She showed at last month’s Oxford County Fair and won reserve grand champion for her division as well as first in fitting and showmanship. In 1995, she had the grand champion 4-H market lamb at the Fryeburg Fair and last year she received a “highly commended” citation.

Jennifer’s win on Thursday was even sweeter this time around because the second-place award went to her good friend and classmate at Fryeburg Academy, Abbie Schofield, also 14. They are both members of the West Oxford Shepherd’s 4-H Club in Denmark as well as the Oxford Caprine Milkers 4-H Club, whose members raise milking goats.
