More than 500 students, staff, parent volunteers and friends of Cascade Brook School in Farmington this week braved the uncertain weather conditions on an October day to challenge the mountains of Weld.

A mixture of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, with three or more adults to each group were assigned to reach the summit of either Tumbledown, Mount Blue, Blueberry or Bald Mountain.

The hike is part of a schoolwide project attempted at the beginning of each year. The reasons behind the arduous day of activities are many, say the teachers. Most talk about team work, having to cooperate with each other to get to the top of the mountain. Or they speak about how learning what it is like climbing a mountain: the student sets a goal (the top) and works hard to achieve that goal, while making new friends.  And in the process, they create a community of caring students that ensure a successful school year.
