Lawrence “John” W. Winslow
NORWAY – Lawrence “John” Winslow died in Norway on Oct. 4, 2022. He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 23, 1930 and was the adopted son of Curtis Winslow. He was educated in Bethel Schools and graduated from Gould Academy in 1949. John served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 serving as a jeep driver for a full bird Colonel. After returning to Bethel John began working at Steve’s Garage on Mechanic Street from 1955 – 1964 at which time he started his career with the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk moved on to a rural carrier position, retiring in 1983.
John married Gloria Tenney Winslow and had three children: Larry, Lorna and Peter. On Nov. 29, 1975, he married Edleen Lee Winslow and became the stepfather to Bruce, Sue and Scott. Together they had 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
John Loved playing cards with his family, especially Sequence, enjoyed listening to old country music by artists like Hank Williams Sr. and Conway Twitty. He also loved to watch western movies starring John Wayne and Roy Rogers. John was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. One of his favorite places to be was “upta camp” with his sons and hunting buddies every November, including last year at age 91.
John was a life member of Bethel Lodge #30 A.F & A.M, a member of the Eastern Star and the Mundt Allen Post American Legion.
John lived in Bethel for 87 years before moving to Norway in 2017.
Services will be held at the Bethel Alliance Church, Walkers Mills Road on Oct. 22 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Kevin Bellinger officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, North Road Bethel following the services.
